When booking your massage appointment it’s important to know which kind of massage you should book. There are several different kinds of massages you can receive, two of which being a Swedish Massage and Deep Tissue Massage. However, both these massage types are often confused with one another. So for this post, we wanted to walk you through the main differences between these two massages so you can know which one would work better for your appointment.

What is a Swedish Massage?

Swedish massages are the base of most massage types. A more rhythmic type, these massages include 5 different stroke methods: effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement, and vibration. The 5 stroke types enable circulation within your body and ease any surface-level tension, making for a relaxing and comfortable massage.

What is a Deep Tissue Massage?

The Swedish massage serves as the base for Deep Tissue. Many of the strokes are also implemented during one of these massages, however, more pressure is applied when kneading.

What are the main differences between the two?

For starters, a Swedish massage is only going to work those surface layer muscles, while a Deep Tissue massage is going to work into the deeper layers of the muscles and fascia in order to break up the tense knots you may be experiencing. As we mentioned above, a Swedish massage is more rhythmic, applying different strokes with the fingertips and or light palm of the hand. Whereas a Deep Tissue massage is less rhythmic and uses the elbow or forearm in order to apply the right amount of pressure to affect knots.

Perhaps the most important difference you need to know when booking an appointment is why people get these massages. If you’re looking to have a relaxing massage as sort of a treat to yourself, then you should book a Swedish massage. If you’re experiencing chronic pain in certain trouble spots in your muscles, then you should book a Deep Tissue massage as it is more likely to address those areas of pain and provide relief.
